Hard chemicals and high heat can cause damage to your coat. So, how we can clean and take care of our faux fur clothes? Don’t panic! In this blog, you will find tips about how to hand wash and machine wash fur clothing.
While you cannot show your nicely shaped long legs, winter still fails to put a cap on your fashion choices. You have fur fashion, wool, leather, and many other choices to make. You can try some short-lived fashion trends that come and go after one season. Or, you can count on something evergreen like fur fashion to stay warm and stylish in winter. It is super easy to put together an amazing winter outfit with a stylish fur coat, mink fingerless gloves for women, and fur accessories like mink headbands for women.
However, when it comes to making your fur coat look best, you need to be extra careful. There are advantages of fake fur over animal fur. Faux fur stands for changes in temperature and humidity and also resists insect damage. From fur coats to headbands, every piece of fur fashion comes with a tag that shows how you should clean and care for your faux fur items at home. Chemicals and high heat can cause damage to your coat. Therefore, if you want to send it for dry cleaning, find a well trained and experienced cleaner. You can both machine wash and hand wash your fur fashion beauties.

Hand Washing
Mix Gentle Detergent in Cold Water
Hand-washing is the best for fur headbands, coats, and other faux fur items. You need a large bathtub or plastic storage container to clean large fur blankets and coats. Add cold water and mild detergent into the basin or sink. Don’t add more than 2 tablespoons.
Submerge
Completely submerge your fur jacket or whichever fur item to be cleaned in this solution. Swish for 10 to 15 minutes through the solution. Excessive writing and agitation are not good for your faux fur.
Drain and Rinse
Take your fur item out of the solution. Be gentle while squeezing out the solution. Drain it in a sink or basin. Submerge it in clean water and rinse.
Squeeze
Gently squeeze once again to remove excess water. You can also remove excess water by rolling the fur item in a thick bath towel.
Drip-Dry
You can drip-dry your fur coat on a sturdy, padded hanger or an indoor drying rack.
Untangle Knotts
Once the coat is dry, grab the brush to lift the fibers by brushing the fur. Be gentle. You can loosen up tangled fur by using a wide-toothed comb. Add two cups of water and a small amount of hair conditioner (1 tablespoon is enough) in a container and then mix. Fill a spray bottle with this solution. Spray it on a small area of the fur. Untangle the fur with a wide-tooth comb or soft-bristled brush. Be gentle and brush slowly covering a small area at a time. Don’t brush too hard as this will make fibers come out. Use a damped, clean cloth to wipe down the area you have brushed. Hang the coat for air drying.
Machine Washing
Take the following steps to machine wash your faux fur coat:
- Add cold water into the washer. Don’t fill it more than a medium level. Add 2 tablespoons of detergent. The detergent should be mild and color-safe.
- Put the item in the washer and leave it in there for 15 minutes to soak in the solution. Soaking for more than 15 minutes is not good for the backing of the fabric.
- Drain the washer after 15 minutes and also set it to a low-speed spin. Rinse and fill the washer with cool water. Don’t agitate. Once again drain spin at low speed. If the fur feels soapy, rinse it again. Keep in mind that avoiding agitation is important to prevent knotting.
- Expect the fur to have a slight, matted finish after machine washing. Use the soft-bristled brush to gently fluff the fur. You can dry your fur coat into a tumble dryer. Avoid using heat. Set it to air-only.
Never store faux fur jacket, headband, or any other piece of fur clothing without completely drying. Always wash before storing your fur fashion clothing for the next winter. Make sure that there is proper air circulation in the storage. Don’t let the dust settle in faux fur. Get a few cotton garment bags to store your items of fur fashion.
Don’t expose your faux fur coat to heat. Clean your fur clothing on a regular basis.
